Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad

The Promised Messiah and Mahdi (as)Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) (1835–1908) was born in Qadian, India. From his early life, he dedicated himself to prayer and studying the Holy Quran and other scriptures. He was deeply pained to observe the plight of Islam, which was being attacked from all directions. He wrote over ninety books and thousands of letters to defend Islam and present its teachings in their pristine purity. While participating in many religious debates, he argued that Islam is a living faith which can lead man to establish communion with God and achieve moral and spiritual perfection. Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) started experiencing divine dreams, visions, and revelations at a young age. In 1889, under divine command, he started accepting initiation into the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. Divine revelations continued to increase, and he was commanded by God to announce that God had appointed him to be the same Reformer of the Latter Days as prophesied by various religions under different titles. He claimed to be the same Promised Messiah and Mahdi whose advent had been prophesied by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sas).

Khalifatul Masih I (ra)Hazrat al-Haj Maulana Hafiz Hakeem Noor-ud-Deen (ra) (1841–1914) was the first Khalifah of the Promised Messiah—Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as). He was elected to this blessed office unanimously by the Community on 27 May 1908, shortly after the demise of the Promised Messiah (as). Hazrat Maulana Hakeem Noor-ud-Deen (ra) was born in Bhera, India, and was the 34th direct male descendant of Hazrat Umar ibn al-Khattab (ra), the second Khalifah of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sas). He started studying the Holy Quran at an early age and travelled far and wide in pursuit of knowledge, including Makkah and Madinah. He mastered Arabic and Hebrew, Islamic jurisprudence and philosophy, commentaries on the Holy Quran, and Persian poetry. In addition to his international renown as an Islamic scholar, he was an accomplished physician serving as the Royal Physician of the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir. Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih I (ra) passed away in 1914 and was succeeded by Hazrat Mirza Bashir-ud-Din Mahmud Ahmad, Khalifatul-Masih II (ra).

Khalifatul Masih II (ra)Hazrat al-Haj Mirza Bashir-ud-Deen Mahmood Ahmad (ra) (1889–1965), was the second Khalifah of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. He was the son of the Promised Messiah and his birth was the fulfilment of the Musleh Mau‘ud (Promised Reformer) prophecy. From his early childhood, he was gifted with knowledge—both, secular and spiritual—and a deep love for the Holy Quran. He was nineteen years old when the Promised Messiah (as) passed away. In 1914, at the age of 25, he was elected as Khalifatul-Masih II. During his almost fifty-two years of Khilafat, he led the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community internationally, expanding the Movement to forty-six countries. He was an avid scholar and a prolific author, who spoke and wrote extensively to defend Islam. A twenty-six-volume compilation of his works called Anwarul-‘Ulum contains over 800 writings and lectures (excluding several thousand sermons). His Tafsir-e-Kabir—a ten-volume commentary of the Holy Quran—is revered as a treasure trove today. He passed away on 8 November 1965 in Rabwah, Pakistan, and was succeeded by Hazrat Mirza Nasir Ahmad as Khalifatul-Masih III (rh).

Khalifatul Masih III (rh)Hazrat Hafiz Mirza Nasir Ahmad (rh) (1909–1982) was the Promised Grandson and third Khalifah of the Promised Messiah and Mahdi (as). He occupied this exalted spiritual station for seventeen years till his demise. Soon after he was elected Khalifah, the storm broke as religion was politicized in Pakistan and a reign of terror and persecution with government connivance and help was let loose against the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, by the frenzied zealots led by the mullahs. In the backdrop of murder, looting and arson, he enjoined his followers to remain peaceful and calm and leave the result to the real Savior—God. He gave the Jama‘at the historic slogan: 'Love for all, hatred for none.' Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih III (rh) passed away in 1982 and was succeeded by Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad, Khalifatul-Masih IV (rh).

Khalifatul Masih IV (rh)Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad (rh) (1928–2003) was a grandson and the fourth successor of the Promised Messiah and Mahdi (as). He was elected as Khalifatul Masiḥ in 1982. After the promulgation of General Zia-ul-Haq's anti-Ahmadiyya Ordinance of 26th April 1984, he had to leave his beloved country, Pakistan and migrated to England from where he launched Muslim Television Ahmadiyya International (MTA), which would (and still does) telecast its programmes 24 hours a day to the four corners of the world. Besides being a religious leader, he was a homeopathic physician of world fame, a highly gifted poet and a sportsman. He had a divinely inspired and very deep knowledge of the Holy Quran which he translated into Urdu. For a layman, he had an amazingly in-depth knowledge of science, especially life sciences which can be observed in his magnum opus, Revelation, Rationality, Knowledge and Truth. Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih IV (rh) passed away in 2003 and was succeeded by Hazrat Mirza Masoor Ahmad, Khalifatul-Masih V (aba), the present head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

Khalifatul Masih V (aba)Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad (aba) (1950 –present) is the supreme head of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. He is the Fifth Khalifah of the Promised Messiah and Mahdi (as). Upon completing his master’s degree in Agricultural Economics in 1977 from the Agriculture University in Faisalabad, Pakistan, he formally dedicated his life to the service of Islam. He was sent to Ghana in 1977, where he served as a principal of various Ahmadiyya Muslim schools for several years. Later, when His Holiness returned to Pakistan, he served in various capacities at the Headquarters of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Rabwah. Elected to the lifelong position of Khalifah on 22nd April 2003, His Holiness serves as the worldwide spiritual and administrative head of an international religious organization with tens of millions of members spread across more than 200 countries. At an individual and collective level, on local, national, and international platforms, His Holiness strives to advise all others on the practical means of establishing peace based on the actual teachings of Islam. As the spiritual leader of Ahmadi Muslims worldwide, he vigorously champions the cause of Islam through a refreshing message of peace and compassion.

Hazrat Mirza Bashir Ahmad

M.A. (ra)Hazrat Mirza Bashir Ahmad (ra) (1893–1963) was born to the Promised Messiah (as) according to the Divine prophecy: “The Moon of the Prophets will arrive and your affair will become manifest ... Soon a son will be born to you, and grace will come close to you.” Upon passing his matriculation with distinction in 1910, he did a master’s in arts in the Arabic language in 1916 in compliance with the wish of the Promised Messiah (as). The blessings of Allah which accompanied him, the prayers of the Promised Messiah (as) in his favour, the guidance given to him by his elder brother, Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih II (ra), and his God-given abilities enabled him to serve the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community throughout his life in various capacities. He was a great religious scholar and a prolific writer. His books, articles and speeches are easily comprehensible, even for the average reader. He wrote on several topics, and his magnum opus is Sirat Khatamun-Nabiyyin. He was a man of God and the recipient of Divine revelations and visions but disclosed them rarely. He passed away at the age of 71.

Sir Muhammad Zafrulla Khan

Sir Muhammad Zafrulla Khan

(ra)Muhammad Zafrulla Khan (ra) (1893–1985) was internationally acclaimed as a jurist, politician and theologian of high calibre. He was a distinguished scholar in world religions and a distinguished member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. Sir Muhammad Zafrulla Khan (ra) was appointed the first Foreign Minister of Pakistan (1947–1954) and for many years he led the Pakistan Delegation to the General Assembly of the United Nations. He was elected President of the 17th session of the United Nations General Assembly (1962–63). He was appointed Judge of the International Court of Justice at the Hague in 1954 and was the Vice President of the International Court between 1958–61. After serving as the President of the U.N. General Assembly during 1962–63, he was re-elected as Judge of the International Court of Justice in 1964 and served as President of the Court from 1970–73. On his retirement, he settled down in the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission in London and dedicated the rest of his life to the service of Islam. He authored many books and translated many writings of the Promised Messiah (as), the Founder of the Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam.
